Why the sports world shut down and maybe saved the world

The corona has been spreading rapidly throughout the world and creating people to
be paranoid. At first, people thought it could never impact them in the U.S because it
started in Wuhan. It started spreading rapidly, however. This disease is extremely
deadly to the elderly and infants. It spreads through all people however and most
people don’t know that they have it. They won't show symptoms for a long time.
The Covid-19 has surpassed 6,700 deaths and is still climbing rapidly. It is a
respiratory illness. This virus has spread to so many people that it was declared an
epidemic. People still haven’t been self-quarantining themselves and that’s how the
virus spreads so quickly.  Schools, buildings, offices and now including every major
sport have shut down including the NBA.

This is the COVID-19 that has been declared as a pandemic
People aren’t allowed to leave their homes in Italy right now. They don’t have enough
supplies to which means they have to choose who lives and who dies. It is an awful
situation. This still didn’t make people be more cautious. The thing that did, however,
was when the NBA suspended their season and every major sports league per college
athletic stopped.
Why did the NBA stop all of a sudden you ask? It is because of 4 days ago when the
Jazz Thunder game was waiting for a go-ahead to play their game at 9 pm EST.
Jazz superstar, Rudy Gobert had been sick for 2 days and was questionable for the
game. He tested negative for everything you could think of. Finally, he felt well enough
to play that night. The team said why don’t we test you for COVID-19 to be safe. He
tested positive. That night and the next coming days were the dark ages for sports.
Every Jazz and Thunder player was quarantined in the locker room until 4 am EST.
They all got tested for COVID-19 including essential staff and the coaching staff. 1
a person out of 58 tested positives and that was Donovan Mitchell, the other Jazz
superstar. Every team that had played the Jazz in the past 10 days had to also be
tested and quarantined. Only 1 other player that we know of now has COVID-19 and
that is Pistons star Christian Wood.

Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell the Jazz superstars who have the COVID-19 and made the NBA go on a hiatus
When the NBA heard that Rudy Gobert had COVID-19 they decided to just cancel
that game. The warriors already said that there would be no fans allowed in their
arena for when they played the Brooklyn Nets. Many other soccer leagues said no
fans and also the Players Championship which is a big golf tournament. The NBA
decided to suspend the season and go on a hiatus. This shocked the world and is
what started to get people thinking that this was a big deal. The NCAA said that March
Madness (the largest tournament for men’s basketball there is) would have no fans.
The reason that is is madness is because you never know what to expect and who
will upset who. It is a crazy tournament. Then the conference basketball tournaments
canceled. Then it was all soccer in Europe. Then it was the NHL that paused their
season. Then all of a sudden March Madness was canceled and then it was the MLB
that suspended their season and canceled spring training.

The front page of the newspaper after the sports world effectively shut down
The NBA started this whole ripple effect throughout the sports world. All of a sudden
people weren’t caring about the money anymore but more everyone’s safety. Adam
Silver(the NBA commissioner) made a BOLD stand that night by putting the community
before everything else. The sports world in total is expected to lose 6 billion dollars and
vegas are expected to lose 4 billion in bets. This is unprecedented. It all happened
because somebody ordered a bat soup.
I think the NBA stopped the next plague from happening. They made everyone realize
that this disease IS a BIG deal. People are now self-quarantining themselves.
Many Colleges are shut down for the year to protect their students. Schools are shut
down for an extended period of time. People turn to sports in tough times but now there
is nowhere to turn for them. They now understand the severity of this. After the NBA
went on a hiatus the president declared a national state of emergency.
This disease I believe is here to stay. The numbers in China are going down a little bit
and up in other spots. Many of these experts believe that there are going to be
multiple waves of corona and they don’t know until when. I believe that the NBA
has set a precedent for how serious this is. The other sports leagues are not going
to start back up until the NBA resumes. MLB has already said it will be a minimum
of 2 months before they start again. I am not sure if fans will be allowed in when this
starts up again.
My thought is that the NBA will start up again after memorial day weekend and not
allow fans in right away. The NBA is not letting teams practice right now or even be
together and the players aren’t allowed to travel outside their home cities. So they
will have to let them practice before resuming play and they need the fans to be safe
in order to let them in.
The MLB will start in June I think and play maybe ¾ of the season with multiple
doubleheaders. I think the NHL will start when the NBA does and the NFL as of now
looks like they only want the money. They haven’t delayed or postponed anything.
But that's the story of the NFL. I think the NCAA should resume all athletics by the
fall and some schools might be closed though.

These are only my predictions but the NBA made people aware. People know the
severity now. That effectively saved the U.S and the world from something that could
be way, way worse.
