The Reality Behind Canada Goose's Elaborate Front

Who doesn't love designer merchandise? Louis Vuitton bags, Balenciaga shoes, and  Gucci wallets are all things that people buy, but has anyone ever heard of designer jackets? That’s where Canada Goose comes in. They have the monopoly on high-end comfortable jackets. With prices ranging from $700-$1300, they are well above popular brands like North Face and Patagonia. Those two brands are well-established companies that have reasonable prices, but Canada Goose is yet another jacket company that prices their goods at outrageously high prices. What’s so special about them, and how have they managed to make themselves into a multimillion-dollar company?

That secret lies in their top-notch marketing team. In nearly every show or movie that is remotely placed somewhere cold, you will see Canada Goose. No actor or director wants to be seen without one. It has become the staple of the movie industry.

You might not think that this helps sell jackets, but actually, it does. The answer is buried in human psychology, namely confirmation bias. According to Psychology Today, confirmation bias is, “...the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms or strengthens one's prior personal beliefs or hypotheses.”Seeing famous, influential people wearing Canada Goose makes them positively predisposed towards the brand. After repetitively seeing celebrities or sports stars wearing this brand that bias will start to build creating a more positive image in that person's mind.

The company works constantly to reaffirm this bias. One of their recent recruits is Kate Upton who has acted in The Disaster Artist and The Other Woman. When people one of their favorite actors endorsing and wearing Canada Goose the first thought that will come to mind is Wow, Kate Upton is wearing Canada Goose! I should totally buy their stuff. Granted that this is exaggerated, after seeing her wear Canada Goose people have a higher chance of buying them. All the company’s do this. Under Armour recruiting “The Rock”, Nike recruiting Rafael Nadal are all examples, but Canada Goose is the worst one of them all.

The company says that they have partnered with Kate Upton to “raise awareness around the fight to save wild polar bears and their habitat.” This is true, but it doesn’t make up for everything else they do. They also mistreat animals. How you ask. Think about Canada Goose’s famed phrase, “warmth, without weight.” Where do you think that comes from?

The simple answer is… goose feathers. The filling of the jackets is goose feathers. These geese are horribly mishandled and brutally killed. First, they get carried to the shipping crates by the neck as they flap their wings trying to fly away. Then they have to stay in cramped crates packed tighter than flex tape for more than 24 hours without food and water. And lastly, these starving dehydrated geese have to wait in sheer terror as their companions are killed mercilessly.

This isn’t just limited to the body of the jacket. The hood of the jacket also comes from mishandled animals. The fur hood creates a very rich, posh vibe, but what the company does not tell you is that the same hood that makes you look so cool came off the skin of a coyote. Canada Goose places gruesome traps that slowly and painfully fill coyotes, many of whom were mothers that were just looking for some food for their pups. These traps can also catch many other animals including squirrels and birds, and if they aren’t dead by the time the hunters come back they can be shot, strangled, or even bludgeoned to death. The coyotes are then skinned ruthlessly and the former husks of their bodies are thrown out with as much care as they were killed with.

Coyotes have the same genus as dogs. Imagine your dog on the hood of someone’s jacket.

Canada Goose is absolutely horrible to animals. They mistreat and brutalize coyotes and geese just to make humans feel warm. Then they try to hide it by telling the world what good they do. Yes, they may safe a few polar bears, but it still doesn’t make up for what they do to geese and coyotes. This needs to end. People are unknowingly buying products created by abused animals. The QR code below contains three interviews of people who knew about Canada Goose. Big surprise, they didn’t know about the mistreatment of animals. We need to spread the word of this cruelty. It is our job as humans to try and help save these animals.

  1. I have known about Canada Goose for a long time now and it’s sad to see that nothing has been done about it. I have never bought any stuff by Canada Goose and I never will. The way they treat animals is disgusting and horrible. They are honestly hypocrites in a way that they want to save the polor bears but mistreat and torture other animals that make up their clothing. It’s sad to see the company profiting off animal’s pain and that this company is still very popular. I think another brand, Forever 21, abuses their animals too. The sheeps they use for wool are beaten and mutilated for the clothes. I agree that this needs to stop and more people should be aware of it.

  2. I have never heard about Canada Goose treating animals with cruelty. I think this needs to be brought up in society more often. People don't generally realize that what they are wearing comes from abused animals. From this, I do not plan to support Canada Goose. The way animals are treated by this company is terrible and leaves me uneasy. It is perplexing to think that the same company that's hurting geese and coyotes is trying to help polar bears. This cruelty also takes place in the cosmetic industry. Rabbits, rats, and guinea pigs are getting beauty products tested on them. Even if they don't get affected from this, these animals are killed at the end of the trial.

  3. I remember hearing about Canada goose once, but I only remembered it after being interviewed. Being interviewed was definitely an experience, I thought we were just talking about some expansive jacket companion, and I was wondering if it was worth it. Then I get asked about animal abuse and it total threw me off. I never thought that this companion selling expansion cloths would mistreat animals as bad as they do. I still find it crazy that this companion is still in business and has not completely shut down due to there’s animal cruelty.
