The New Addiction-TikTok

Open Tik Tok. Scroll. Like. Scroll. Scroll. Like. Scroll. Comment. Scroll

I’m pretty sure most teenagers know that rhythm well. A lot of us can get sucked into
the app pretty easily, and for a long period of time. I mean, the app is pretty addicting, I
can’t lie. The app supplies you with videos that YOU will be interested in. It’s almost a break
from reality, a time where you don’t have to think about school, chores, or just any problems
in your life in general. And that’s the addiction, we crave that little time where we can break

from reality.
When I first downloaded Tik Tok, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. Sure, I
had used Musical.ly when I was in 5th-6th grade, but Tik Tok wasn’t exactly lip-syncing to
the latest hits while moving your hands and phone weirdly. Tik Tok was different, it was filled
with humored jokes and more dancing. I would enjoy strolling down the for you page with
my friends. It was just a fun app where I could just chill and relax on the couch, right?

Well, it wasn’t exactly the case for me. The problem started when I posted my own Tik
Toks. When I started, they only got about 10 likes each(pretty normal). I had fun doing weird
challenges on my phone and getting comments from a few close friends. That’s why I had
never expected to wake up with one of my videos having over 20k likes. I soon began
making and posting tons of Tik Toks a day, hoping that one of them would blow up. I don’t
think that anyone can doubt that I had a HUGE Tik Tok addiction.

I don’t think I’m the only one who struggles to get off the app sometimes. The app is
just designed to make you say “one more video”. Many teenagers crave that Tik Tok fame
that seems to just be given to anyone who makes a funny, or good quality content. And,
when good content is coming out, viewers will enjoy a good giggle or some amazement,

making them scroll down farther. Even on Snapchat and Instagram, it’s hard to avoid seeing
Tik Tok’s being reposted. It’s not that surprising saying that the app is the most downloaded
in recent months and there are over 500 million active users.

I definitely use the app less than I did over the summer, but that doesn’t mean that
people still struggle to get off the app. However, I don’t think that using Tik Tok is totally
horrible thing. It’s a fun app to make videos with your friends and to just pass time but you
have to use it wisely to make sure you aren’t spending TO much time or you can slowly sink
down into a Tik Tok addiction

  1. I totally agree with the rise of teenagers becoming addicted to Tik Tok. I see that you pointed out all the reasons why people are becoming to Tik Tok. This makes me realize that I am addicted to Tik Tok. Just today, I have spent over five hours on this app. I think this is leading to sleep deprivation. Tik Tok can also be addicting because this app isn't repetitive, every video is different.

  2. Not going to lie I love to read a good TikTok blog and your blog provided on that front. I know that rhythm you stated in your blog all too well. TikTok provides interesting videos I just can't seem to get enough of. You stated "The app supplies you with videos that YOU will be interested in." Sometimes, the videos TikTok shows me align eerily well with my interests. For example, once I was looking at a pair of shoes on a website. But, these were no ordinary shoes, they were a specific pattern and style that isn't very common (I don't even remember the name of the shoe). A few minutes later I go on TikTok and guess what pops up on that video...those exact shoes, down to the style. I want to know your reason for: how did TikTok know? Personally, I think they steal your data and track you but maybe there is another explanation.

I never really thought of how much of a distraction TikTok provides until you brought it up. It is a break from reality where you don't have to think and that does feel really nice after a long, stressful day. I applaud you for this interesting and valid explanation for the TikTok addiction. Also, I didn't know what TikTok was exactly going to be like when I downloaded it too, but it is definitely way different compared to Musical.ly. Also, it gave me chills when you said that one of your videos got over 20k likes!? This makes me wonder: what was your video about? It is really impressive that you were able to achieve some TikTok clout. Also, I want to know: what are your tips for ending a TikTok addiction?

Once you watch one TikTok, you can't get enough.
